“MetroFocus” Production Intern


The Department:

This is an entry-level opportunity to learn about television production, news programming, segment production, guest booking, web management and development through observation and hands-on work with the MetroFocus Production Team. An intern will work behind the scenes of public television’s MetroFocus assisting staff in all facets of segment production, from research, to field and control room, and studio shoots.  MetroFocus airs 5 days a week, while recording up to 20 segments every week, so the pace of the production makes this Internship an absolute must for go-getters wanting to learn about Television News and Public Affairs Programming.

Description of Duties:

An intern is needed at WNET/WLIW to support the Emmy Award-winning PBS series MetroFocus in all aspects of production. This is an excellent opportunity for students to gain first-hand experience working within a television news production unit. This position is unpaid, however college credit is available.

Responsibilities include: research, transcription, screening tapes, photo/film licensing, archiving and filing, researching segments, booking guests, greeting guests, and assisting in the production of field and studio shoots. There will also be opportunities for involvement in the production and post-production processes, learning control room skills, assisting with local shoots and observing edits and recording sessions.


  • Strong interest in television production, news and the arts, preferably with broadcasting news production or web experience.
  • Strong writing and research skills are required.
  • Basic knowledge of Final Cut Pro 7 is a major plus.
  • Detail-oriented, able to work independently and a positive attitude.

Opportunity Profile: 

At the end of the internship, students may be given the opportunity to pitch, book produce and edit a segment of their own for air on the broadcast.
