WNET is Full “STEAM” Ahead with Vámonos Ciencia/Ready Go Science!

WNET’s Early Learning Team is full “STEAM” ahead this spring on the Vámonos Ciencia/Ready Go Science! family engagement project in the South Bronx. This project is funded through the U.S. Department of Education’s Ready to Learn Initiative to promote science and literacy for young children in low-income areas.

Kids’ Media & Education educators, Norah Jones, Ellie Jànszky, and Stefa Alarcon, along with our partners at East Side House, held our first Play and Learn Science Family and Community Learning session on March, 29. Eight families from East Side House’s Head Start programs came together for hands-on STEM activities, read-alouds, tablet time together, and community building. They worked together to design and build ramps and test different materials for rolling and sliding.

Families loved spending time together, and parents commented on how great it was to have a whole new set of easy at-home science activities. Each family took home a book at the end of the session to build their home libraries as well. The next Play and Learn Science session will take place on April 19, 2019.

East Side House also hosted a Playful Learning for Educators training for staff who work at their Head Start Preschools as part of their monthly Professional Development day. Norah Jones trained 17 educators on integrating media experiences into guided play sessions in their classroom. The training also helped educators to identify quality educational media resources like PBS KIDS and WNET videos, apps, and games.

Stay tuned for more Vámonos Ciencia/Ready Go Science! updates from Kids’ Media & Education as the project continues over the next two years.
