Tremendous Turnout at “Thomas & Friends” Brooklyn Event

On Saturday, November 5 2016, WNET and the Brooklyn Public Library welcomed more than 900 parents, caregivers and children to “Meet Thomas at the Library.”

Families from all five boroughs as well as Westchester, Long Island and New Jersey lined up around the block for a literary adventure with their #1 favorite blue engine.

Thomas-72The morning event was geared to provide a sensory and autism-friendly experience with special accommodations for all visitors. The library was made open to the general public in the afternoon and received a spectacular number of Thomas fans, many of whom were dressed in Thomas-themed costumes.

The guests took part in family activities, book readings, episode screenings, and of course a personal meet-and-greet and photo opportunity with Thomas himself.

Here is what some of the event attendees had to say:

“It was a very nice event. My son enjoyed meeting Thomas and we learned that maybe we can take him to the movies after seeing him watch Thomas in your screening room.” – Anecia F.

Thomas-37“I came from the Bronx for this event. As soon as my son’s teacher gave me the flyer, I knew I had to drive up here with him and meet Thomas.” – Vanessa F.

“The autism and sensory friendly session was awesome. As kids came in, I handed them the Feelings chart and asked them how they were feeling. I got several ‘excited’ and some ‘nervous’ and one ‘scared.’  When I asked them on the way out, all I got were ‘happys.’ One mother told me ‘I was so excited when I saw it was something I could bring all of my children to.’ She has 3 children, two of them on the autism spectrum.” – Carrie Banks, BPL Inclusive Services Director

This event is just one part of a community engagement campaign for Thomas & Friends. This fall, WNET will launch new PBS LearningMedia and PBS Parents content. WNET will also be publishing a bilingual family guide with learning activities for the whole family.
