The WNET Group Elevates Eugenia Harvey To Chief Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Officer

Today The WNET Group, home to PBS stations THIRTEEN, WLIW21 and NJTV and NPR station WLIW-FM, has announced the appointment of Eugenia Harvey to the new position of Chief Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Officer (CDEIO), effective immediately.

Now a member of the senior management team, she will be involved in all decisions and will play a central role in the efforts to build a more inclusive organization. She will report to Neal Shapiro, President & CEO of The WNET Group.

“The WNET Group is deeply committed to fighting racism, injustice and discrimination,” said Shapiro. “As we seek to make decisions and content that better reflects and serves our diverse communities internally and externally, the role of Chief Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Officer is more important than ever.”

“I believe in the power of public media to be a catalyst for positive change in the world,” said Harvey. “I look forward to helping The WNET Group fulfill its mission by fostering honest conversations about race, equality and representation, both within our organizational decisions and in the programming and initiatives we offer to our local and national communities.”

Eugenia joined The WNET Group in 2018 as executive producer of Chasing the Dream: Poverty & Opportunity in America, a public media initiative providing critical programming on poverty, income inequality and opportunity, and Peril & Promise: The Challenge of Climate Change, a public media project reporting on the human stories of climate change and its potential solutions. Both initiatives have led to numerous partnerships and have inspired content for our local and national programs and websites, PBS Digital Studios, public radio and digital productions. The Chasing the Dream initiative was nominated for two New York Emmys in 2019 for its Getting Off the Streets series and under Eugenia’s leadership, was nominated for two in 2020 for its series, a Dream Deferred. She will continue to oversee these projects.

Eugenia is an award-winning veteran producer, showrunner and television executive with a wide range of experience in both commercial and public media, including as an executive producer of the recent Carlos Watson series, Third Rail, and as producer of the Race Matters: Solutions series for the PBS NewsHour with Charlayne Hunter-Gault, as well as various high-profile projects for A&E, ABC News, CBS News, and CNN.
