PBS Launches National Storytelling Project “American Portrait”

American Portrait is a national digital-first, multi-platform storytelling project that explores what it really means to be an American today.

Tens of thousands of people across the country will be connected, creating a communal voice through individual stories of joy, hardship, triumphs and sorrow. User-generated content will be captured through video, photo and text submissions shared directly from everyday people across the United States.

“Utilizing all our diverse resources, American Portrait will create a fully integrated portrait of American life and a window into who we are as a nation as we enter a new decade,” said Perry Simon, PBS Chief Programming Executive and General Manager, General Audience Programming. In January 2021, American Portrait will take all user-generated content and create a nationally televised documentary series.

While people can directly upload their content to pbs.org/americanportrait,  community and local leaders will also be recruited to help their family, friends and neighbors—from all walks of life and backgrounds—share their stories.
