Meet Volunteer Melissa W.

I am a veteran journalist, having worked as a writer and editor for the Associated Press, a reporter for Nightly Business Report, and an anchor and producer for Morning Business Report on public television — Channel 2-WPTV in Miami. I decided to volunteer at WNET eight years ago because I strongly believe in the mission of public television — bringing the public great quality programming.

Currently I am working in WNET’s Photography Department, scanning print photographs into a digital archive. I am learning so much about photography and I enjoy doing things I have never done before.

My favorite public television programs are Great Performances, FRONTLINE and NOVA. These programs bring quality information and entertainment to the public. I often watched children’s programming as my son was growing up – Sesame Street, Cyberchase and Clifford the Big Red Dog were our favorites.

When I’m not volunteering, I manage a British television channel, Mirador Television, on Roku TV. I am also a Captain in the Civil Air Patrol, the auxiliary of the US Air Force. I started my involvement with the Civil Air Patrol when my son joined as a cadet back in 2012. I began as a Senior Member to help the squadron and the cadets and over the years was promoted to Captain. I have been involved in management of the squadron, including helping cadets structure weekly meetings, teaching aerospace topics such as rocketry, organizing Honor Guard practice and events and creating and managing the squadron website and Facebook page.
