Diane Murray

Hoboken, NJ, United States

My name is Diane Murray and I teach 6th grade at Elysian Charter School in Hoboken, New Jersey. Mission US: Flight to Freedom is a really great online game that I found to do with my class. They all play a young girl who’s enslaved and throughout the game they make decisions which affect what happens to the girl. And they get to get a sense of what it was like to be enslaved, what it was like to escape slavery, and what it was like to live in the free northern states.

Throughout the game, students interact with fictional and historical figures, examine primary source documents, collect vocabulary words, and use maps to navigate historic settings. Mission US became the heart of my slavery curriculum because it’s so comprehensive.  The game really holds kids' attention.  Each part is not terribly long so you can break it up over several days although the kids will want to do it all at once.  And they were still motivated, since they enjoy the game so much, to do the activity afterwards that was reflecting on it.
