The reason why people choose to use drugs or alcohol or food or sex or gambling is the same regardless of the substance. Although people's "war stories" differ the common vein that runs through someone with an addiction is the same. That is why there is so much success in treating these diseases through rehab, therapy and 12 Step Programs. It works when you work it!!! Duh. The fact that the Close to Home producers posted this question shows how clueless they are. Are all diabetics the same? I think the series sucks. I was especially dismayed at the first night. It was totally insensitive to show triggers to cravings and then not offer any help. How many addicts watching the show experienced cravings caused by the show? The best thing I could say about the producers is that they are insenstive. I think they are also possibly unethical. The show should offer help not triggers to cravings. (I also think the doctor studying cravings in unethical. She didn't really seem to have much interest in the addicts, just her research.) Back to the question about all addicts being the same: I think my main problem with the show is that it's written from the point of view of non-addicts who view addicts in a simplistic, prejudicial way. The consequences are very serious and severe for the addict and his family. Food addiction is not taken as seriously because the substance is not as foreign as drugs and alcohol. I hope that Bill Moyers will address this issue at sometime. When someone gains 100 pounds in under 4 years food is running their life just as completely as an addiction to drugs. Message: This is one person's opinion aafter more than a few years attending AA meetings, working with other alcoholics and in the mental health field: alcoholics and addicts A variety of ways. They are typically wounded people, they are seekers, and they are highly complex people. The Moyer's special seemed to be slightly reductionistic and simplified.
