Topic Description: Three days ago I was notified that my son had relapsed, I had found out since that he had tried to kill himself. He is now in a Mental health center in Florida.I have guided him into several organizations that was recommended by our local community service board. That was two years ago and several thousand dollars required by several places in Virginia and Florida.I've watched and taped the Bill Moyers program and find itso vague as to what really works. I've called organizations mentioned in this documentary and they seem to be no different from the places my son has tried. I'm told that I am helping him too much. Others are saying I'm not getting him the right kind of help. The last episode is when he was weaving in and out of traffic in West Palm Beach, Florida. He had taken cocaine and sleeping pills. Somebody had alerted the police and he was taken to a mental health center. Had his stomach pumped.I really do not know what to do anymore. If you are reading this Mr. Bill Moyers what is there that can truly help my son? This is the second time he tried to kill himself.I'm feeling so helpless for him that I have dreadful thought of him successfully ending his life to get him out of the terrible hold of the drug on him. After watching that program on PBS by Bill Moyers and following up some of the so called helpful organizations, I find myself with a sinking feeling that there really is no help for my son out there.

My heart goes out to you. Been there, done that : had to lock my 17 yr old son out and force the issue. Hurt like hell. He has 8 years clean and sober now, but at the time it was sure awful. There is hope and you need to get you to a meeting and start working a program yourself. Pray your butt off. I will pray also, without knowing your son's name...God knows him and knows everything about him. There is no magic cure, but I can tell you from experience that I should have been dead a long time ago -- I tried suicide; I put myself into situations that should logically have resulted in my death; I felt that I deserved to die. But God had a plan and he had his hand over me, protecting me before I even knew him or believed in him. God loves alcoholics and addicts...check out the little card "Why we were chosen" from an AA meeting. Drop your religious ideas and get started on a spiritual life. You may be surprised. Keep asking. And getr help for yourself, because alcoholism and addiction is a family disease -- if you change one thing (yourself) the rest of it shifts and changes. It works if you work it. e-mail to follow. Hang in there and don't despair! margaret
