Subject: Discography Response Posted by: Carla Maria Verdino-Süllwold (75467.732@compuserve.com ) Institution: Personal Assistant to Thomas Hampson Date Posted: Fri Jan 10 18:07:55 1997 Message: Dear Mr. Rush, There is not, to my knowledge, a complete discography of American song at present. We did contemplate one for the Web site, but encountered problems because many of the fine recordings of the past were no longer available and some of the repertoire Thomas Hampson selected still not recorded. A few immediate suggestions do come to mind, however: NEW WORLD RECORDS's series devoted to American music offers an in-depth look at the concert song and can still be found in liubraries and some shops; the Smithsonian Folk Archive & Music Division does maintain a list of tapes and recordings for sale--from folk and ethnological music to more standard American songs; currently on the commercial market, Thomas Hampson also has recorded for Teldec N OLD SONG RESUNG, an album of IVES, GRIFFES, AND MACDOWELL SONGS, (with John Browning & Cheryl Studer) BARBER SONGS on Deutsche Grammophon, KURT WEILL ON BROADWAY, NIGHT & DAY (Cole Porter) and with Craig Rutenberg will have a release in March of Walt Whitman settings. Harolyn Blackwell has recorded the Ricky Ian Gordon cylce GENIUS CHILD from which MY PEOPLE comes; Dawn Upshaw has a considerable discography of American music, among them KNOXVILLE SUMMER OF 1915 Barber/Agee. Actually, as we discovered in making this project, much of the joy is in searching; as one discovery leads to the next, the quest can become truly exciting.
