Did I HEAR AMERICA SINGING leave you desirous of learning more about American song, poetry, and visual art? If so, on what aspects particularly? (Please feel free to post specific questions.)

Emphatically, yes, especially poetry set to music. This program sent me back to rereading much of Leaves of Grass and Emily Dickinson. Do you know, Mr. Hampson, if any of the work of Edna St. Vincent Millay (besides Ballad of the Harp Weaver) has been set to music? Do you think particular types of poetic rhythms or meter or language lend themselves more to musical interpretation than others, or is there such a wide range of musical and poetic styles that the possibilities are limitless?

There is such a rich treasure of American art song that this evening's program could have lasted five hours and only scratched the surface. We need to encourage the presentation of this sort of song in our concert and recital series throughout the country. And one way of doing this is for PBS to present these kinds of programs regularly.
