Most moving for me: Deep River, In the Woods, Sure on This Shining Night, Prayer to St. Catherine; most entertaining: Amor, Circus Parade; and by far most stirring: General Booth Enters Into Heaven. The most informative aspect of the narrative was the way it linked the progression and diversity of American musical styles to other cultural and social developments and to the visual arts.

I love art songs so it was a treat to hear such a diverse presentation as on this program. American art music isn't performed enough, especially vocal music, and this program begins to fill that void. More like this one would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

How fortunate that Thomas Hampson invested the time and energy to organize this special event. My favorite performances were "General Booth....", Amor, and the Clown song performed by Jerry Hadley. Bravi tutti!

Each of the artists was a masterful interpreter. For me, Frederika von Stade's song about "Amor" stood out as delightfully humorous. I hope this program will be presented again. The stage settings were wonderfully appropriate to evoke a drawing room setting.

I know that Hampson has a great Stephen Foster disc, Upshaw has a recording of Copland's Dickenson songs, and Horne has her American songbook disc... all of which are wonderful. What others are available, recommended? Replies: (list all replies)
