If this was supposed to be a lesson that God did not want human sacrifices, it wasn't remembered for long. See the story in the Bible about the General who kills his daughter as a sacrifice to God. If God was supposed to be giving the Jews a lesson that He did not want human sacrifice, he could have just sent down a lighning bolt and burned the letters into a mountain: "DON'T KILL YOUR KIDS." That would have had the added benefit of not traumatizing Abraham and Isaac. I agree with Mark Twain that the God of the Old Testament is one of the worst villains in history.
