Any thoughts out there on the fact that we seem to be running out of time ala Bucky's predictions in Critical Path? He has been shown to be correct time and time again, I fear he may be right in that humanity is out of time with regard to our "option to make it". In Critical Path he said that we, humanity, needed to spontaneously switch over to a technological revolution no later than 2000. We are rapidly running out of time! I am absolutely sick at the thought that we will not, indeed choose not to use our "option". Anyone have any thoughts on this?

When I heard Bucky as an undergrad at one of his famous "thinking out loud" sessions, he used the analogue of humanity as an egg or still encapsulated in its embryonic shell, unable to reach beyond the confines of this present world - nation state existence... presently boundeded by the blindness of its newly formed eyes adjusting to the light (truths?) from outside. AS THE CHICK, curious to venture beyond the confines of the limiting shell begins to peck at its warmed safehaven of development, it may encounter stong resistance. But now the desire to free itself becomes all the greater... and the chick continues in earnest to break open from its confinement with newfound resolve and determination... until, at last, often by trial and error, it succeeds in making a crack in the shell (and as we all know, light can shine through a very small hole). Experiencing this small triumph, gives the chick new found enthusiasm and, tired as it maybe, it stuggles almost incessantly to further erode the now perceived incarceration until, through other small successes, the chick (humanity) reaches a threshold of total emancipation ...fighting to extricate itself from the old shell completely. Bucky saw us or 'humanity' as at the stage where a few cracks have been made and the great beyond is beckoning... he said we still are approaching many of the thresholds required to free us, but that once these were realized a whole new era of enlightenment, enchantment, and wonder awaits. He believed, I think, that our potentials were unlimited provided we could stay focused and 'on-task' ... that we absolve ourselves of old and obsolete thinking and of the subsequent "false goals" that only work to detour us from our rightful destiny as a sucessful species and true guardians of earth's beauty and natural resouces...that we are destined, by diligence and forethought, to turn the planet into a garden of natural wonder and scenery of cityscapes that make the "Emerald City" pale by comparison. I hope he is right... and I hope I have done an adequate job of relating his vision...he desearves as much. His soliloquy was so much more enthralling, descriptive, enlightening, hopeful, and insightful that I fear you'd be better off reviewing the video tape, if there exsists one, of his thinking out loud... a beautiful man with a golden heart.
