WNET and Sesame Workshop Kickoff the School Year at “Discovery Day”

On Saturday, September 9, more than 1,000 children, parents, and caregivers celebrated the beginning of the school year at the Queens Public Library’s Discovery Day.

WNET, through a partnership with Sesame Workshop, had a tent at the event to spread the word about the new Sesame Street in Communities (SSIC) initiative.

One of the highlights of the event was the meet and greet with Cookie Monster! Children and the young at heart lined up for a picture with the walkaround of the famous Muppet and stopped by the WNET table for stickers, crayons, and coloring sheets from SSIC.

WNET’s Education Department team members Kristina Kirtley, Janice Fuld, Jasmine Wilson and Norah Jones, along with volunteer Merry Chang, shared examples of activities on healthy eating, social-emotional development, early math, and building resilience from the SSIC website.

Among the many families that showed up were Selina Sharmin and her daughter, who starred in WNET’s New York Parenting Minutes videos and Dennis Walcott, President and CEO of the Queens Public Library and former Chancellor of the NYC Department of Education.

Www.SesameStreetinCommunities.org is a website that contains resources for families and children under five. Digital storybooks, articles, videos, and printable activities cover topics on everything from early literacy, establishing routines, and eating healthy foods to more challenging topics like emergency preparedness and dealing with divorce.

WNET will be conducting professional development workshops with early childhood providers and appearing at family events to promote the Sesame Street in Communities Resources through the end of the year.
