WNET Celebrates National Mentoring Month with Job Shadowing & Multi-Platform Partnerships

This past January, WNET celebrated the 15th anniversary of National Mentoring Month, an annual awareness campaign created by American Graduate Day lead partner MENTOR.

During the month of January, WNET promoted mentoring in the following ways:

  • Created a promo to celebrate the month and encourage viewers to use the American Graduate Mentoring Connector database. The promo aired almost 250 times on all three stations during the month of January, resulting in 1,000 searches of the database in New York State (10% of searches nationwide).
  • Participated in the National Mentoring Month Twitter Chat on January 4, resulting in a 50% increase in organic impressions for the @WNETEducation handle.
  • Worked with the Nine Network in St. Louis to create custom branded National Mentoring Month American Graduate Day video clips for social media. To date these videos have been viewed more than 40K times on the American Graduate Facebook page.
  • Hosted a job shadowing day for college freshman Atiya Jones. WNET Vice President of Education Carole Wacey met Jones at a special graduation ceremony for NYC students who spent all or some of their high school years in the homeless system.
  • Featured the NYC Mentoring Initiative, announced by Mayor DiBlasio and NYC Service, on MetroFocus. The segment highlighted AGD partner iMentor, an organization that combines online and in-person mentoring to help students get to and through college.
  • Attended the National Mentoring Summit in Washington D.C. on behalf of American Graduate Day. This year’s theme was “Building Relationships, Advancing the Movement,” and 1,000+ attendees representing both the public, private, and nonprofit sectors discussed the latest trends and research in the mentoring field.

For anyone interested in making a difference in the life of a young person, you don’t need to wait until next January to become a mentor! To find a volunteer mentoring opportunity in New York City, click here. Outside of NYC? Click here.
