Run DMC’s Darryl McDaniels Tapes “American Graduate Day” Testimonial

This week, American Graduate Day taped a testimonial with Darryl “DMC” McDaniels from the legendary hip-hop group Run DMC.

WNET’s Mike Kostel, Anna Campbell, Chris Brande, and Shiva Darshan from the American Graduate Day team met with the groundbreaking artist at Camp Felix in Putnam Valley, NY. McDaniels founded Camp Felix in 2006, along with Emmy-winning casting agent Sheila Jaffe.

The overnight camp in upstate New York has served 1,000 youth from the New York City foster care system, providing them with a place place to play sports, learn to swim and experience nature. It’s a second family to the foster children they serve, whose lives are often in disarray.

Camp Felix works with youth in foster care to become tomorrow’s leaders, with a goal of providing consistency in their lives. Young adults that were apart of the camp have become camp counselors, gone to college, and defied the statistics to achieve their unique dreams and goals. As one camper simply stated, “At Camp Felix I feel like I can do anything!”

This year’s American Graduate Day broadcast will examine the vital role that mentorship plays through high school, and will explore diverse pathways to career success and workforce development opportunities.

As the summer draws to a close, the AGD team wants to thank all of those at WNET who are mentoring young people through the organization’s internship programs. Be sure to tune-in on Saturday, October 14, 2017 at 2pm to see Darryl McDaniels’ testimonial, and more great stories of mentors and champions!
