Mark Nixdorf

What is your background, and how did you land at NJTV?

I was able to make the transition to NJTV because of my time spent learning about television from the great Engineering staff at WNET: Dave Winter, Bob Suhr, Sergey Shapiro, Jeff Dockendorff, and John McGowan, to name just a few. I’m very grateful to them and for the 13 years of experience at THIRTEEN.

We hear the NJTV server room where you spend much of your time is super cool – and by “cool,” we mean chilly! How do you stay warm in those Arctic temps?

Yes indeed! I usually keep an extra light jacket to stay warmer while I’m in the rack room. It’s also insanely noisy too due to the air conditioning and all the equipment, so I wear ear protection, as well. I try to balance the time I spend in the rack room and the rest of the studio facility.

For our Media with Impact campaign, we’ve been asking viewers to share stories describing how THIRTEEN has influenced their life. How has THIRTEEN (or the PBS station of your childhood) inspired you?

The arts and musical programs have inspired me the most. I always felt that THIRTEEN was a great channel to watch as the programming was (and continues to be) so interesting and educational, especially all the music programs.

Which three shows airing on our stations this month are you most likely to watch, stream, or record?

I don’t watch a lot of TV, but my perennial favorites are Nature, American Masters, and NOVA. This is a great question. I may need to catch up with some of the wonderful new programs we air on our stations. You never know, I may get inspired all over again!

Where do you live, and what are some of your favorite places in your neighborhood?

I live in North Plainfield, New Jersey. One of my favorite places is my house and yard. I love spending time there! My wife Katherine and I also have some favorite places outside our neighborhood. The Tewksbury Inn in Oldwick is one of our favorites, and The Harborside Grill in Atlantic Highlands is a fun place between boating activities.

What book are you currently reading?

I’m reading A Cruising Guide to New Jersey Waters by Captain Donald Launer. It’s an interesting read for me because I love to learn about places I may venture to with our boat, and it’s fascinating to read about the history of the waterways and tributaries of New Jersey.

Do you have a special interest or hobby outside of work? If so, tell us about it!

Yes, I’ve always loved motorcycle riding on the back roads of New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, and Virginia to name a few. Also, five years ago, my wife Katherine and I bought an old boat. We love to work on it when spring arrives, and in summer go fishing and cruising around the Sandy Hook and Raritan Bays off New Jersey. And of course, sharing a bottle of wine with Katherine and cooking up great food on the barbecue is very special outside of work.
