General Colin and Alma Powell Tape “American Graduate Day” Testimonials

WNET’s Mike Kostel from the American Graduate Day team traveled to Washington, D.C. to attend an event at the D.C. Promise Neighborhood Initiative (DCPNI). There he met General Colin Powell and his wife, Alma Powell, who were attending the event on behalf of America’s Promise Alliance. Under the leadership of Colin, the Founding Chairman, and Alma, the current Board Chair, America’s Promise Alliance has become the nation’s largest partnership focused on the well-being of young people.

DCPNI focuses on the well-being of young people through their education programming and work to break the cycle of inter-generational poverty in the Kenilworth-Parkside neighborhood of D.C. Together with high quality, results-driven partners, they are working to transform educational outcomes for children from cradle to college to career. As Alma says, “Everyone, both big and small, can pull their weight, and ensure that the hopes and dreams of every child become realities.”

This year’s American Graduate Day broadcast will examine the vital role mentorship plays through high school, and will explore diverse pathways to career success and workforce development opportunities. The AGD team also wants to thank all of those at WNET who are mentoring young people through the organization’s internship programs. Be sure to tune in on Saturday, October 14, 2017 at 2pm to see General Colin and Alma Powell’s testimonial and more great stories of mentors and champions!
