Major Gifts Officer

WNET.ORG, parent company of THIRTEEN and WLIW21, is a major producer of broadcast and online media for local, national and international audiences, creating award-winning content in the areas of news and public affairs, arts and performance, science and nature, documentaries, and children’s programming.

WNET also produces the Celebration of Teaching and Learning, and provides innovative educational outreach at both the local and national levels.

Position Description

The Major Gifts Officer will manage a portfolio of 150+ donors and prospects, and is responsible for actively cultivating, soliciting, closing, and stewarding gifts of $25,000 to $250,000 or more.

This is an externally-focused position, working closely with donors and with WNET leadership and trustees.

The Major Gifts Officer is a key member of the Development team, reporting to the Director of Major Gifts.  This is an opportunity to join an exceptionally productive results-oriented team and grow your career in philanthropy.

Responsibilities include:

  • Manage and develop a personal portfolio of 150+ major donors and prospects.
  • Identify, qualify, cultivate and solicit potential donors and secure major gifts from these individuals.
  • Develop and implement strategies to cultivate, solicit, and steward prospects.
  • Work closely with WNET leadership and trustees to cultivate and solicit major donor prospects—as well as personally solicit gifts.
  • Collaborate with Content producers and on-air and online production departments to secure funds for priority initiatives.
  • Work closely with Development, stewardship and events staff to build long-term donor relationships.

Qualifications and Skills

Qualified candidates should have the following experience and skills:

  • An innovative thinker and strategist with a demonstrated track record of successfully closing major gifts ($50,000+) from individuals.
  • 3 to 5 years of experience working with donors and raising major gifts within the New York philanthropic community.
  • Superior interpersonal communication and writing skills required, along with the ability to take initiative and manage complex projects, and work effectively in a results-oriented team environment.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Power Point) and Outlook. Experience working with development databases such as Raisers Edge.
